The Problem with Smart Kids

This is a really long entry, so please click "Read More" to get everything all at once.  Thank you.  - The Management :)

The last week has been interesting to say the least.  Let’s start with Jack’s issues as they have caused the most work and change in our house.

A week ago Jack got into the fridge and took out the chocolate syrup.  Not too unusual because whenever the fridge is open he grabs something in bottle form and runs!  For that reason I’ve had to throw out steak sauce and salad dressings that went MIA without my knowing.  On the 21st I was going to the bathroom (silly me I know) and went looking for Jack.  Found him in the kitchen in a puddle of chocolate syrup.  It required a new outfit for him and a cleaning of the floor, but more cleaning of him than the floor.  The next day he got away again and went into the kitchen and I found him…..can you guess?  Need a visual aid?

Yup.  Found him playing baby Picasso on the kitchen floor with the chocolate syrup.  He did not get a new outfit but it two cleanings of the floor before it didn’t feel sticky anymore.

We decided it was time to get the gate we had been talking about but there was a slight problem.  They don’t make gates that our kids couldn’t open wide enough for the space.  Damion was a sweety and built a little half wall, which actually goes nicely with our plan for the kitchen/dining area.  Well even with Anna’s “help” it wasn’t a one night project, nor a very level wall.  The next day Jack was still getting into the fridge & testing my nerves so I found an unused child safe lock thing for the toilet and put it on the fridge.  It stopped Jack!  Not Anna, but she locked it after getting something out.  The new problem?  Jack decided he wanted to hang out in (yes, in) the oven.  That day at lunch I caught him holding the tongs beside the open and hot oven door saying “Hot!  Hot!”  He was trying to turn the mini corn dogs.  That night schedules magically allowed for time to get the gate and finish out the half wall.

Now is where Anna joins the story.  She is able to latch the gate.  She is not however able to open the latch.  At one point yesterday when the gate was open she went into the kitchen to get an apple for a snack (the one snack she’s allowed to have and get herself anytime of day).  Well, goofy girl latched the gate and then got her snack.  Next thing I know she’s stuck and sad and realizing she might get in trouble…

…....which she did not.  She merely got reminded of the rule that only mommmy and daddy can open and close the gate.  Actually she got reminded about this several times yesterday afternoon.  I had finally reached my reminding limit and told her that if she latched the gate again she would have to spend 5 minutes in her room.  And well, while I was talking with Lori she latched the gate and was taken to her room crying “I listen Mommy.  I listen Mommy.”  Well 5 minutes later Damion returned home from work and I asked him to let her out of the room.  After I told him why she was there he & Jack got her from her room and found she had changed her shirt but had a bit of a problem.

I'm sure you've noticed that Jack is laughing at Anna but also notice he is coming to help her.  A note about the shirt she was trying to put on, she got it two Christmases ago from Joe and I’m happy to report that she has finally mostly grown into it!

So the moral of the story, if you have a kid who likes chocolate syrup as an art media make sure the other kid knows how to unbutton shirts :)
