Too bad for Rob PDF Print E-mail

In the way of hard drives, Rob's is hosed.  In a sad account of events this morning he told me of the sad sound of bearings grinding.  It's really too bad.  I know how hard it is to recover after a drive failure.  He's looking into a data recovery company to get all his stuff back.  He's not completely lost, just horribly out of date.  The last backup was in April.

This leads into an interesting use of a cheap $100 Dell GX110 from E-bay and Ubuntu Linux.  Open the case and toss in a 250GB or two and It's a backup solution designed for everyday users.  Jess has her own computer and I have a couple laying around that have drives spun up.  In the early morning, there is a script that runs on our Windows XP computers that copy specific information to the cheap Ubuntu box.  It's our nightly backup of files, music, pictures, email and other items.  It's incremental which means that only changed or new files are backed up.  The longest it takes is about 30 minutes.  Ever accidentally delete a file?  Just pop over to the Ubuntu network share and find it!  It's quite easy.

Future improvements may included bi-weekly DVD backups of all the copied data.

I was thinking about putting together a little guide for people to do this on their own.  Maybe.  I'd have to have time.
