Computer tool kits...
Rants
Written by Damion

Can someone explain why a computer toolkit from the year 2008 still includes a useless soldering iron?  First off, it's probably only a 35 watt iron which can barely melt paper, let alone industrial, high temp solder.  Additionally, the tip that is included with the kit is not small enough to work with almost any of the components on a mother board.  Even if the tip on the iron was small enough, there is a reason that these things are assembled by robots.  The average human hand just doesn't have the dexterity or stability to solder that small of a connection without damaging the board.

I've had first hand experience with this.  I've successfully replaced parts on motherboards including power jacks for notebooks and capacitors for larger boards (had to use a 45 watt iron to melt the solder to remove the part).  However, there is always something else wrong.  For the average home PC, which is the primary thing I work on, a new mother board can be as little as $70.  That's alot less than you are going to be paying me to replace some parts on the board and then still have it not work because of a power spike that killed three transistors I can barely see with a magnifying glass.

So, now you may be asking what's in a tool kit that's usefull?  Well, here's the list:

  • Precision set of screwdrivers (Flat and Phillips)
  • Needlenose pliers
  • Small set of nut drivers
  • Anti-static mat and grounding wrist strap (yes, static is a real threat)

That's you're basic kit.  It's got everything I need to replace any practicle part of a home computer.  And if it's a server, I'll probably need less.

Don't worry... more rants are coming.  I have a plan.  Comment away!

Office Shed - Jess' Response
Observations
Written by Jessica
Saturday, 01 March 2008

Yes, as he stated Damion has been talking about an office shed since about a month after we moved into this house.  A couple of weeks ago we drove by Lowe’s and I commented about the sheds there.  Damion stated that the only problem with them already being assembled is getting them into the backyard, unless of course you rent a crane.  A couple of seconds later my response is verbalized.

I said, “What you need to do is contact one of the crane operators working in Uptown.  Have the shed delivered there and attached to the crane.  The crane operator will then lift it up and swing it around in a circle and at just the right time he will release it and it will land in our backyard!”  And of course it is complete with a cute look.  Damion’s only response, “Is it fun to be you?”  I laugh and state, “Most days, yes.”

Most importantly though, I think it should be noted that I am not opposed to the Office Shed idea…..maybe there is a bit of selfishness (I get the office/craft room all to myself and guests will have a place to stay where Sam won’t jump through the rails on to them) but I still support this idea 100%.

Good day to everyone.

I was taking a break at work yesterday and I decided to go looking for anyone that had been inspired like I have been the past few months.  Some of you may know that I run a small consulting company on the side.  Recently, talk has begun of dedicating a certain number of hours a week, around 8 to 10,  to one of my clients.  The company has done projects for them in the past and we have worked well with them with only after normal business hours communication.  My point...

During the most recent of those projects, a website redesign and implementation, I came to the conclusion that I can't work out of the house.  There are just too many things that I would rather be doing.  First off, I'd much rather play with the kids and spend time with Jess than sit in my shared office (maybe Jess could throw a picture in later of it) and work. So that leads to needing a place outside the house to work.

I was inspired by the idea of building a shed, and it looking like a shed on the outside.  One the inside, it would be a high tech office for one!  With a little browsing on the Internet, I found someone who had the same idea!  He built a project site with pictures and a video

I'm going to build one of these.  Similar, but not exactly the same.  It will have my own design.  The city I live in has some limitiations (I don't want to have to get a permit to build it) that sets the max size to 144 sq ft, and 12 ft high.  So, I need to work in that limitation.  The only questions now are how to strap it to the ground (slab, footings, or what?  Remember, NO PERMIT!), how to supply power so that it's not a taxable building (outside box with a 2 ft locking extension cord, maybe?), and then how much will it cost.

It's a big project.  I've even toyed with the idea of building it in such a way that I can plant grass on the roof!  I know, that's a pipe dream, but wouldn't that be really neat?  Comment away... I can handle it.

It's a good day for Ikea!

I'm taking a half day at work, tossing Jess and the kids in the car and we are off to Ikea, dinner with Dawn and Archiver's!  I'm sure you can tell that this is going to be a fun afternoon and evening!

Of course, after last nights impromtu living room change up to protect the children from themselves, today's a piece of cake.  It's amazing how a ball of wires grows when left unatteneded behind the entertainment center for about 8 months.

Adam... you're getting your Onkyo system on Friady, so be prepared to wrangle the mess 'o cables come November!

Woo Hoo: IKEA!

Feeling better with a question...
General Items

After being sick for a few days, and leaving the TV on the History Channel while moving in and out of a coma, I've learned a few things, and I have a question...

What I've learned...

Caligula was messed up in the head.
His real name was not Caligula.
And way to much more about Caligula, or "little boots".
Tiberius was worse.

And I ask this one question...

Did the wicked witch of the west shower, or was she dry clean only?  Hahaha.  More importantly, how did her mom know before the first bath?  That would have be bad... "Here we go... a wicked witch still has to be clean... let's put you in the tub and wash you...  OH NO!  hehehe.

On the plus side, I'm starting to feel better.
